The Patient and Family Support Fund was established in 2003 to help cancer
patients who are experiencing financial hardship as a result of their
diagnosis. Cancer patients often cannot afford the basic necessities
[travel, accommodation, meals] when receiving their treatment. This year,
$68,309.50 [including gas certificates] was disbursed to 294 patients. The
Fund is generously supported by donors and corporate sponsors Dominion
Stores, Shoppers Drug Mart, North Atlantic and The Power of Life Project.
A new personal resource room "Our Living Room" was officially opened in
March 2006. This renovation was completely funded through a generous gift
from Bellissima and French Dressing Jeans. Bellissima's owner Ruth
Bell-Steinhauer has hosted a fashion show, "Dress for the Cure" for the
past three years to raise funds for this room. Ms. Bell-Steinhauer chaired
a volunteer committee who worked closely with cancer patients and staff to
ensure we had a room that was bright, inviting and comfortable. "Our Living
Room" is located on the first floor of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer
Centre, St. John's.
The Kids with Cancer Travel Fund was established in 1991 and provides
financial assistance for accommodations, travel and meals to children with
cancer in Newfoundland and Labrador. This year, the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy
Cancer Care Foundation provided $15,170.82 in assistance to eighteen
families who had a child diagnosed with cancer. The tremendous financial
burden experienced by these families is often a result of travel costs to
St. John's and lengthy stays while their children receive treatment. Our
thanks to the K-Rock Children's Trust Fund for their generous sponsorship
of this program.
The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation pledged $100,000 to the
Teleoncology Project.
The Teleoncology Project supports cancer services throughout the province
through teleconsultations, the transmission of medical information and the
provision of education and training for cancer professionals, patients,
families, and support groups.
This project began in early 2005 to help reduce travel by cancer patients
allowing them to be assessed and/or treated in their home community where
they have the support of family and friends.
In November 2005, a new Power of Life project, 'You have the Power', was launched to promote the importance of early detection and screening programs in the diagnosis of cervical, prostate, breast and colorectal cancers. 'You have the Power' promotes a comprehensive and collaborative approach to cancer prevention and care in Newfoundland and Labrador and raises funds for treatment, patient support and education and awareness projects. Project partners are: Newfoundland Power Inc., Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation and the Department of Health and Community Services, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
