
Dr. Kim E. Hong Endowment Fund
Dr. Kim E. Hong has cared for and treated thousands of cancer patients throughout Newfoundland and Labrador during his 35 years as a Radiation Oncologist. Dr. Hong is best known for his compassion and outstanding commitment to his patients and their families.
In 1999, Dr. Hong's friends, colleagues and former patients came together to support an education endowment fund for the staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and affiliated regional cancer programs. This Fund honours Dr. Hong and the importance he places on advanced and continuing education for health care professionals.
Educational scholarships and awards are granted annually to staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and affiliated regional cancer programs. Application forms are available by contacting (709) 777-7589.
In 2007 - 2008 The Dr. Kim E. Hong Endowment Fund Committee awarded two scholarships and two awards totaling $11,346.00:
- Trudy McDonald, Radiation Therapy Nurse, has 15 years of service. She received an award of $3,000 and will attend the Annual International Conference of the Association of the Study of Lung Cancer in San Fransico.
- Ron Murphy, Programmer/Analyst has five years of service. He received an award of $3,000 and will attend the Sybase System and Database Admin: Adaptive Server Enterprise in Toronto.
- Cheryl Boone, Clinical Trials Nurse, has six years of service. She received a scholarship of 1,746 to continue her Masters of Nursing - Specialty Nurse Practitioner stream.
- Carmel Collins, Palliative Care Nurse, has five years of service. She received a scholarship of $3,600 and will be completing her Bachelor of Nursing - Nurse Practititoner, Primary Health Care.
