Steele Communications/VOCM Cares:
Steele Communications has been helping cancer patients and their families for many years. The VOCM/CFCB Garden of Hope Radio-thon is an annual province-wide event. Since its launch nine years ago, over $500,000 has been raised through the Radio-thon. Steele Communications is also a major sponsor of the Kids with Cancer Travel Fund through the K-Rock Children's Trust Fund which has helped to provide $46,755.09 for families throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Newfoundland Power: Power of Life Project:
The Power of Life project was launched in 2002, in partnership with Newfoundland Power and the Department of Health and Community Services. The POL project funds cancer education and awareness programs and cancer treatment and support programs.
The Tree of LIFE is a national fundraising program that gives Shoppers Drug Mart's customers an opportunity to support health research, treatment and education initiatives. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the proceeds from the Tree of LIFE go to the Patient and Family Support Fund, which provides assistance to cancer patients throughout the province who experience significant treatment-related expenses as a result of their diagnosis. In 2004, more than 200 cancer patients received assistance from the Patient and Family Support Fund.
North Atlantic Petroleum Inc. generously supports the Patient and Family Support Fund through a donation of gasoline gift certificates. Cancer patients travel from all over the province to regional cancer centres or the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre for treatment and appointments with oncologists. Travel costs can be prohibitive especially for those having to make numerous trips. Cancer patients who qualify for assistance can visit one of the nearly 80 North Atlantic Refuel Gas Stations located throughout the province.
