A Story To Warm Your Heart

There are hundreds of couples in Newfoundland and Labrador who hear “Your husband has cancer”... but not many of them are told three months later… “So do you….”

I met Doug when I was 17 years old and we are high school sweethearts. We married and had our son, Nicholas who is graduating high school this year.

In 2003, Doug was diagnosed with cancer, and after losing our niece at the tender age of 15, it was a devastating blow to our family. As we prepared for the road ahead, I was then diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of fifty.

As partners, we have journeyed together through marriage, parenthood and growing old - now we are both battling cancer together.

We have undergone rounds of chemotherapy and radiation at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.  From the moment we enter the Cancer Centre we feel as though we are enclosed with a warm layer of support.  During each visit, we are welcomed by everyone with such compassion – from the receptionists, volunteers, and porters to the nurses, social workers and oncologists – they have treated us both with such tenderness and kindness. 

We have met many Newfoundland and Labrador families at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre who are facing the treatment of this disease.  Like us, every bit of help gets them through the day.
